Enjoy our charming 1950s country picture show atmosphere with the latest 21st century cinema technology!

The South West Roxy Cinema is situated in the historic 1926 School of Arts Community Hall at the beach end of Gregory St, South West Rocks.

The Roxy is one of the last operating examples of the country picture shows which operated in almost every country town before the advent of television. Often screening just once or twice each week, a picture show man would ride into town and set up his projector to show movies, cartoons and newsreels. No wonder it was the social centre of every country town during that era.

Today, the South West Roxy Cinema operates all year round on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays plus ALL public and school holidays. All our films are presented with digital projection and brand new, improved digital surround sound, while selected titles are presented in 3D by Real D. The Roxy screens current major Hollywood releases as well as specialising in arthouse titles from around the world.

The Roxy is now owned by TV and Film Historian Andrew Mercado, who may be familiar to viewers of Channel [V] and Nine Network shows as A Current Affair and Kerrie-Anne. Andrew is at every session to introduce the movie and chat to patrons as they exit. Come check out his framed movie posters which now adorn the walls of The Roxy and enjoy the new deckchair and bean bag seating.

So, take a trip down memory lane and come visit this boutique cinema. Enjoy the freshly made popcorn, lollies, coffee, tea and cold drinks, and our hand-made choc top ice creams from the Snack Bar.

The South West Roxy Cinema is a “must see” attraction when you visit South West Rocks.

RealD 3D is the new generation of entertainment, with crisp, bright, ultra-realistic images so lifelike you feel like you’ve stepped inside the movie.  RealD 3D adds depth that puts you in the thick of the action, whether you’re taking a voyage through an undiscovered land or dodging objects that seem to fly into the theatre.

RealD pioneered today’s digital 3D and is the world’s most widely used 3D cinema technology.  RealD 3D is 100% digital so it delivers a stunningly realistic and fully immersive entertainment experience every time.  And unlike the old days of paper glasses, RealD 3D glasses look like sunglasses, are reusable and designed to comfortably fit on all moviegoers, and easily over prescription glasses.

RealD 3D is so advanced that you don’t just see what’s happening on the screen, you can really feel it.  Don’t just watch a movie, experience a new dimension of entertainment with RealD 3D.

RealD 3D is available on selected titles and sessions, as identitied on our Sessions Times page. All sessions not identified as 3D are screened in the DCI compliant 2K digital cinema format - the world standard for cinema presentation.

Open Captions

Open Captioning is the text version of speech and other sound and is displayed on the bottom of the Cinema Screen. It is used to show which character is speaking or where the sound is coming from. Colouring may also be used to distinguish between sounds. Captions are particularly useful for people who are Deaf or hearing impaired. Open Captions are available on select titles and sessions marked O/C on our session times listing.

Open Captions allow you to enjoy the movie with a hearing impaired family member with everyone having the full movie experience!
